Everyone was up in arms last night over the prospect of the Iranian president visiting Ground Zero. (See previous post here) It all stemmed from the Iranian mission at the UN’s request for the NYPD to escort Ahmadinejad to Ground Zero so that he could “lay a wreath” at the site. Blood pressure across the blogosphere skyrocketed and it quickly came out that the request was to be denied on the basis of ‘security concerns’.
Of course that sounds like a completely bogus reason because it is one. The real reason that his request is denied is because no one could stomach watching the head of state whose terrorist special forces are actively killing our troops visit the site of the worst terrorist attack in the history of our country.
So there was a quieting of the rabble and many immediately stated that it was a no brainer that he wouldn’t be permitted to make his trip. Our country couldn’t be so naive as to permit such a thing.
They were in for a real surprise when Ahmadinejad announced that he was going to go ahead with his trip, without the escort of the NYPD, and instead it was speculated that under our UN obligations the Secret Service would have to provide his security detail! I can’t imagine what was going on in the homes of some of my fellow right-wingers when that little bulletin came across the wire. I just hope that no one was near any sharp objects or hot beverages that might not react well to outbursts.
There was more consternation, and it was recently announced that Ahmadinejad “will not press” his desire to travel to the 9/11 site. He is also surprised at the American people’s outrage. I don’t know if this is somehow supposed to appease those of us who felt sick at the notion, or if he realized that there would most likely be a real effort made by those in the United States government to prevent his travel, which might result in embarrassment for his government. I think the real purpose of this visit, beyond it serving as an obvious f*** you to all of America, would have been to show the power and prestige that the Iranian government wields on the world stage.
I think that Senator McCain, whose campaign is in real trouble by the way, has upstaged Mitt’s soundbyte as the best response by stating that Ahmadinejad should be “physically restrained” from visiting.
In other news, Columbia University is more than happy to let the Iranian president come and spread his propaganda at a University event where he will be introduced by no less than the University’s president himself. I’m glad to see that our institutions of higher learning take the threat of international terrorism seriously. If you’d like to repost either the ‘Hell No’ or ‘Submit’ image in your own blog, feel free to. Awareness of this evildoer’s history, hysteria, and hatred is very important.

Wonder how Al-Jazeera’s gonna spin it?
I think it’s obvious that the guy wants a photo op for propaganda purposes.
We don’t need to give it to him.
