I was a fan of the first book Steve Alten wrote. MEG was about a giant prehistoric great white shark surfacing and the quest to keep it from chewing on the locals. I also really enjoyed his sequel to it, The Trench. As someone who hopes to pen a novel someday (don’t we all) I hate to have to write someone off, but that’s what I’m doing.

I will not support Steve Alten again by ever reading or purchasing one of his works. Why, you ask?

His new novel, The Shell Game, is about a US government conspiracy to pull off a mega 9/11 in order to create a justification to invade Iran for the sweet, sweet oil. Alten is an admitted truther. This is the way that idiotic ideas seep into popular culture, and propaganda seems to describe the book pretty well.

If you want more background on how clueless Alten appears to be or the book’s blatant inaccuracies, search Screw Loose Change. Personally, I’m bummed. Of course, the third MEG book was pretty bad, so perhaps it was simply foreshadowing…
