With Super Tuesday seeming to go McCain’s way, and the signs of Huckabee/McCain collusion obvious now, our conservative movement may be going the way of the Alamo.
I can’t find WV polls to gauge, but Martha MacCallum claims Romney’s 41-33 win during the first round of balloting was a surprise. Huckabee won the caucus when McCain’s supporters were apparently told to throw their support to him and keep the state out of Mitt’s hands.
Romney accuses Huckster and Straight Talk of backroom deals.
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney’s campaign accused Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee of “a backroom deal” that gave the early Super Tuesday win in West Virginia to Huckabee.
Romney, who addressed the state GOP convention in person Tuesday, comfortably led the first ballot at the convention, leading to a three-way second ballot contest between the three contenders.
Marc Ambinder of The Atlantic reported Tuesday that, after the first ballot, McCain’s campaign called his supporters there and urged them to vote in favor of Huckabee.
“Unfortunately, this is what Senator McCain’s inside Washington ways look like: he cut a backroom deal with the tax-and-spend candidate he thought could best stop Governor Romney’s campaign of conservative change,” Beth Myers, Romney’s campaign manager, said in a statement.
Maybe in the future, the primary of 2008 will become a sharp rallying cry for Conservatives in the way that the Alamo became a mythic defeat that put fire in the belly of Texas patriots later down the line.
Either way, it’s going to be a long night. Michelle has more.
Update: Going to be linking to analysis and pontifications as they roll in.
Update: Seeing a lot of pro-Obama sentiment in the exit polling. Mixed bag for Romney thus far (scroll down for exit poll links). He has to win California.
Update 8:14PM CST: I’d like to think that Fox just has it in the bag for McCain, but it looks like Huck has managed to keep his hold on the south. Scroll down for updated totals. Romney has to win California in order to remain viable. Of course, it was a bit heartening to hear talk of a McCain/Romney ticket. I could live with that. If Huckabee is the VP, I’m 99.9% sure I won’t vote.

Update 11:15PM CST: McCain takes California. Mitt is done.
