Neeeevveerrmind, Says Economics PhD Hugo Chavez.
Posted by: Neocon in Chavez, Nutter Butters(via Instapundit) Hugo Chavez was flexing his muscle last week when he threatened to cut off oil to the United States as a result of Exxon’s success in having billions of dollars worth of Venezuelan assets frozen by the United States during a heated legal battle over oil services.
Well, after thinking it over for a few days, Hugo has decided to fold when he realized no one was listening.
Feb. 17 (Bloomberg) — Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who threatened to cut off oil sales to the U.S. a week ago, said the government won’t do so unless the South American nation is attacked.
“We don’t have plans to stop sending oil to the U.S.,” Chavez said today in comments broadcast by Venezuelan state television. “All I’ve said is that, if the U.S. attacks us, we’ll have to decide not to send one drop of oil to the U.S.”
Of course there aren’t any plans to attack Venezuela, but that’s a convenient line that authoritarian thugs like to use against the United States in order to justify their consolidations of power. It’s nothing new. That being said, this non-story has died before it really went anywhere. Now if Exxon wins its case… then we might see some fireworks.
