As a veteran of the internet I can still remember the days when AOL was king. As soon as it started picking up and DSL/Cable became available for less than an arm and a leg, many AOLers jumped ship as soon as they could. Horrible service, wasteful coaster CDs in the mail every other week and advertisements on your paid service don’t make for happy customers.
It’s obvious that AOL still doesn’t have a clue about the marketplace. They just booted the president of their “Platform A ad business” after only a few months. They can’t even get people to use it when it’s free. (Did you even know AOL is free now?)
March 11, 2008 — AOL ousted Curt Viebranz, the president of AOL’s Platform A ad business, just seven months after tapping him for the top post.
The company said Lynda Clarizio, president of AOL’s Advertising.com, will replace him as part of a “consolidation and integration plan.”
Industry sources said Viebranz was pushed out after clashing with AOL Chief Executive Randy Falco and Chief Operating Officer Ron Grant over AOL’s shifting strategy.
“It’s schizophrenic from one day to the next,” said a former insider, who asked to remain unnamed.
An AOL spokeswoman declined to comment beyond the release
It’ll be a good day for the internet when AOL disappears entirely, or cleans up its act… though I doubt the latter will ever happen.
If you’ve got an AOL horror story, feel free to share it, though I understand if you want to keep that gloominess in the past.
