James Fallows at The Atlantic has some dreary comments for what we know about the current unrest in Tibet. (Hint: We’re mostly clueless)

No one outside Tibet knows exactly what is going on there right now or at least I don’t, but in case observers outside China are in any doubt: This is potentially big, big, very consequential news.

It would be out of character for the Chinese regime (which is relaxed about many things, but not at all about “separatism” in any form) and also contrary to fundamental Chinese doctrine for the government not to respond with very great force to whatever is happening in Lhasa. Among other things, this will certainly change the tone of international discussion about the Olympics, in which China has an enormous investment of pride and “face” and which are now less than five months away.

It certainly would be news for the Chinese Communists to be conducting themselves with any but a quick and ruthless hand to put a stop to any ideas of cessation from the State.

Gateway Pundit has pictures and what little details are available, including rioting. The ChiComs are blaming the Dalia Lama.

Update: The EU is wagging its finger at China. Good luck there.
